Josie Bianchi

Head Coach

Josie is a recent alum of Stanford University, returning to her alma mater to coach SMT. Josie served as SMT’s assistant coach during the 2020-2021 season and stepped up to be our head coach in January of 2022 following Thom Scher’s passing. Josie served as the President of Stanford Mock Trial for the 2019-2020 season, leading the program to its sixth consecutive Nationals bid. She competed for SMT all four years of her undergraduate career, earning numerous awards and a spot in 2020’s Trial By Combat individual championships. Outside of mock trial, Josie works at the Hoover Institution, enjoys theater, and watches Jeopardy.

Audrey Mitchell

Assistant Coach

Audrey is a recent graduate of Stanford University and a current 1L at Berkeley Law. She competed with SMT for four years as Vice President, team captain, and highly awarded witness before transitioning to Assistant Coach in 2022. Audrey has also coached mock trial at the high school level, leading the University High School mock trial team to their first county win in several years. In Audrey’s free time, you can find her competing on the Berkeley Law Trial Team, vetting submissions for the Berkeley Journal of International Law, editing articles for the Berkeley Business Law Journal, engaging in pro bono work with the Foster Education Project, or watching theater.

Eli Tannenwald

Assistant Coach

Eli is a current 2L at Stanford Law School, where he’s a member editor for the Stanford Law Review and moot court competitor. He spent last summer at a qualified immunity nonprofit and hopes to work as a civil rights or criminal defense attorney. Prior to law school, he graduated from UC Santa Barbara, where he was a four year competitor for the UCSB Mock Trial Team, earning several awards as both an attorney and witness. Eli was the president and A-Team captain of UCSB MT, leading the program to its highest ranking in its history and first back-to-back nationals appearances. In his free time, he enjoys listening to podcasts, playing pick-up basketball, and putting far too much effort into fantasy football—though he did win the 1L league last year.

Darien Carter

Assistant Coach

Darien is a self-described “Mock Trial aficionado” with a passion for a subtle cravat. Having never attended Stanford or become a lawyer, he is pleased that the folks at Stanford have liked him enough to continue to invite him to hang out with them in Palo Alto when he feels like getting out of San Francisco. Darien brings over a decade of mock trial experience to the table, having competed at high levels of competition at the high school level in Pennsylvania and in college at Howard University, where he served as a team captain all four years and President of the program his senior year. He was the coach of Stanford B from 2017 to 2020. He describes the crowning achievement of his time as part of SMT as coaching Josie to her first award at Geneva ORCS in her junior year. In his spare time, you can catch him running for the 11:04pm Caltrain
