FAQS

How can I learn more about SMT before tryouts?

You can follow us on Instagram @stanfordmocktrial to learn more about SMT, mock trial, and what it’s like to be a part of our amazing team! Once school starts up again in September, we will be tabling at the Activities Fair, hosting information sessions, and running office hours ahead of tryouts. We’d love to see you at these events!

Do I have to be interested in law to compete on SMT?

Not necessarily. SMT is a competitive public speaking activity related to the law, not a club about the law. While many of our members go on to pursue legal careers, we’ve had members studying everything from Biology to CS to Theater and Performance Studies.

Will I be at an advantage if I’ve done high school mock trial?

No prior mock trial experience is necessary (we mean it!) Every year, we take students with varying levels of mock trial experience. While some of our members had competed in mock trial all four years of high school, others had never heard of the activity until they joined SMT. All we are looking for during the tryout process are individuals with an interest and raw talent in public speaking, acting, and competing (i.e. winning) in a close-knit team!

I did mock trial in high school. How is college mock trial different?

College mock trial is more fun, dynamic, and adaptive! While most of the format is the same, college cases tend to be more complex, allowing for more interesting trials and creative case theories. We’re given longer case packets, with more witnesses to choose from (and witnesses which can be called by both Prosecution/Plaintiff and Defense sides). Even if you have prior mock trial experience, you’ll be able to hone your presentation skills as a member of SMT.
